Thanks to the lockable height stop, \nthe sample is reliably protected against damage. \nThe nosepiece focus – \nReliable focus and repeat accuracy \nAs the sample is brought into focus by moving the nose-\npiece up and down, it is not necessary to move the sample \nitself. This means, particularly in the case of heavy samples, \nthat it is possible to guarantee consistent focus and repeat \naccuracy. Both stand variants – Axio Imager.A2 Vario and \nAxio Imager.Z2 Vario – are equipped with a motorized \nnosepiece focus, which has a 5 mm stroke and a step-size \nresolution of 25 or 10 nm.\nThe sample is brought into focus simply by moving \nthe nosepiece up and down.\nAvailable as an option: manual transmitted-light module, suitable for \nKöhler illumination, for all common contrasting techniques.\nStable column design: \nvibration-free working \n5 mm\nAxio Imager Vario offers a flexible system platform for research,\ntesting and development involving large material samples in areas \nsuch as the solar, flat panel and wafer industries. \nOperating elements for precise adjustment of the microscope module \nin the z-direction and lockable height stop.\n\n\nPage 5\n5\nThe stages and sample holders – The perfect basis\nDepending on the application, four different sample stages \nfor reflected-light and transmitted-light can be selected:\n• manual stage with 200 mm travel range for \nreflected-light and transmitted-light\n• manual stage with 300 mm travel range for \nreflected-light\n• scanning stage with 200 mm travel range for \nreflected-light and transmitted-light\n• scanning stage with 300 mm travel range for \nreflected-light and 200 mm travel range for \ntransmitted-light\nThe manual stages are equipped with a coupler which can \nbe used to switch between the regular x-y drive and a \nhandle for rapid movement. It is possible to control the \nscanning stages with a repeat accuracy of 1 μm either via \nthe optional x/y drive on the Docking Station, via a separate \njoystick or using the PC. Numerous different insert plates \nand sample holders such as chucks for different wafer sizes, \nensure the flexibility needed to be able to analyze the wid-\nest possible range of materials reliably. In the case of par-\nticularly tall samples, the sample stage can be dispensed \nwith entirely.\nThe transmitted-light module – Light from below\nA manual transmitted-light module suitable for Köhler illu-\nmination is available as an option for all common contrast-\ning techniques. This module can be equipped with halogen \nor LED illumination. In addition to a luminous field dia-\nphragm, it also has a switchable diffusion screen, as well \nas an insert for a double filter wheel to hold neutral-density \nfilter sets. Four different condensers are available.\n\n\nPage 6\n6\nThe Microscope Modules\nPerfectly Equipped – Manual or Motorized\nAxio Imager.A2 Vario\nThe partially motorized microscope module Axio Imager.A2 Vario \noffers a solid base for measurement, analysis and docu-\nmentation in the area of materials microscopy. It is the \nright choice for applications where, although a large sample \nspace is required, no motorization is necessary – for chang-\ning the contrasting technique or magnification, for example. \nLight intensity and the motorized nosepiece focus (with 25 \nnm step-size resolution) can be adjusted conveniently us-\ning the freely positionable MARC (Manual Rotary Control) \ncontrol unit or PC, while coding of the key components al-\nlows essential microscope parameters to be adopted by the \nAxioVision software. The objective and total magnification, \ncontrasting techniques and brightness settings are stored \nand can be retrieved at any time.\nWhether for manual or motorized microscopy – \nwith its three available modules, \nAxio Imager Vario offers the right solution \nfor every analysis need.\n\n\nPage 7\n7\nAxio Imager.Z2 Vario\nThe powerful Axio Imager.Z2 Vario microscope module \nis fully motorizable and therefore the perfect system for \ncomplex applications and challenging tasks that demand a \nhigh degree of automation. Your work is made considerably \neasier thanks to the motorized reflected-light beam path, \nwhich allows all light and contrast settings to be precisely \nreproduced. All the motorized components of the micro-\nscope module can be controlled via the docking station \n(which is also freely positionable) or PC – ensuring a high \ndegree of operating comfort and reproducibility. The inte-\ngrated user administration also means that work can be \nmanaged simply and clearly in a multi-user environment. \nUse of the MARC control unit is also an option.\nIn addition to reflected light, both Axio Imager.A2 Vario and Axio Imager.Z2 Vario \nmicroscope modules can be equipped with the manual transmitted-light \nunit and can be freely combined with the sample stages available.\nAxio Imager.Z2 Vario without focus\nAxio Imager.Z2 Vario without focus is the third microscope module avail-\nable. Apart from the nosepiece focus, it offers the same functionality as \nAxio Imager.Z2 Vario. This model is recommended for situations in which \nthe microscope module is integrated into custom solutions that make use \nof the external focus drive of the customer’s own system. Once again, \nthis microscope module, together with the optional Control Box, can \nalso be controlled via the Docking Station or a PC.\n\n\nPage 8\n8\nFurther information\ncan be found at\nwww.zeiss.de/objectives\nThe Optics –\nBrilliant Vision\nAxio Imager Vario is the logical continuation of the Axio Imager family, \nwith its tried-and-tested, renowned optical performance.\nThe illumination concept –\nInformation in brilliant quality\nYou will see your objects in brightfield and darkfield in proven \noutstanding quality. Stray light has been minimized and im-\naging is virtually aberration free. Excellent image contrasts \nis achieved, especially in interference contrast and even at \nhigh magnifications.\nThe objective series –\nExperience Enhanced Contrast (EC)\nTo obtain comprehensive image information, you need to \nuse a wide range of objectives. With the Axio Imager Vario \nobjective series, Carl Zeiss has provided solutions for all kinds \nof requirements, in various price and performance categories.\nEC EPIPLAN Objectives\nThe economical, all-around series of objectives, which have \nbeen achromatically corrected and strain-minimized for \nimpressive-quality DIC create a flat field image for an inter-\nmediate image size of 23 mm and are available in brightfield \nor brightfield/darkfield variants. The exit pupils are always \nidentically positioned, and Differential Interference Contrast \nin circularly polarized light is possible with all EC EPIPLAN \nobjectives using a single C-DIC prism.\nEC Epiplan-NEOFLUAR Objectives\nThe particularly high-contrast EC Epiplan-NEOFLUAR objec-\ntives, which have been corrected to a high degree and strain \nminimized, enable you to achieve sharp C-DIC and create a \nflat, 25 mm field of view – ideal for displaying fine color and \nstructural details, e.g. lamellae in spherulitic graphite. Avail-\nable as DIC/C-DIC, Brightfield/ Darkfield, Pol and LD (long \nworking distance) variants, they also offer the additional ben-\nefits of long working distances and high numerical apertures.\nEC Epiplan-APOCHROMAT Objectives\nThe EC Epiplan-APOCHROMAT objectives satisfy the very \nhighest demands. They are ideal for imaging color and struc-\ntural details in the sub-micrometer range and are renowned \nfor offering the best correction and highest numerical aper-\ntures. Based on ICS optics from Carl Zeiss, these innovative \nEnhanced Contrast objectives perform at the limits of what \noptics can achieve with regard to contrast and reproduction \naccuracy.\n\n\nPage 9\n9\nAxio Imager Vario also offers you \nthe convenience of being able \nto control all functions remotely.\nGreater comfort, simpler \nchanging of contrasting \ntechniques: The modulator \nturret for interference \ncontrast. \nThe tube lens turret – Increase your flexibility\nWith its flexible magnification range, the Axio Imager Vario \ntube lens turret offers greater variability when it comes to \nadapting the desired frame. The tube lens turret is avail-\nable in two variants: 1) Encoded: this variant allows you \nto achieve an exact magnification and automatically save \nthe scaling factors that can be derived from this in the \nimage for the analysis. Measurement results are reliable, \ndocumentable and reproducible. 2) Motorized: this variant \noffers you additional operating comfort for your system \nsolutions. And Axio Imager Vario tube lens turret offers yet \nanother advantage: the use of a focusable Bertrand lens, \nan important component for the easy observation of the \nobjective exit pupil.\nThe modulator turret – Easy to operate\nSwitching quickly and easily from one contrasting technique \nto another – the C-DIC modulator turret has been developed \nprecisely with this goal in mind. Each of the four positions \ncan be conveniently selected with a simple turn. The motor-\nized variant is particularly easy to operate. When switching \nto interference contrast, the correct module with the setting \nyou have previously defined is automatically activated. If you \nswitch to brightfield or darkfield, the blank position will also \nbe automatically selected for fast and, above all, reproduc-\nible results.\nThe nosepiece – Flexibility in detail\nThe nosepiece provides room for up to seven objectives. You \nnow have a sufficient number of objectives to use the entire \nstandard magnification series. This increases reliabilty and the \nsample throughput rate. Naturally, it is also possible to com-\nbine objectives. \nThe reflector turret – Switching made easy\nAll Push&Click contrast modules can be stored securely in\nsix or ten positions and activated as needed using manual\nor motorized method.\n \nMore options, faster handling:\nThe reflector turrets with \nPush & Click Modules.\nThe motorized diaphragms – Constant image quality\nUsing the motorized aperture and luminous field dia-\nphragms you can achieve error-free, reproducible settings \nand, consequently, constant image conditions. Motorization \nguarantees you comparable results and higher productivity \nby automating the workflow.\nThe aperture diaphragm – Simple, but clever\nIt is often simple optimized detail that can improve your \nday-to-day work. A perfect example of this is the newly \ndeveloped aperture diaphragm from Carl Zeiss.\nThis is a slider with a motorized aperture-diaphragm re-\nvolver. The special feature is a disk with fixed diaphragms \nthat rotates rather than the usual aperture iris that is opened \nand closed. Thanks to this improved component, we are \nable to guarantee you a twofold advantage: greater repeat \naccuracy and a longer life for the component.\n\n\nPage 10\n10\nTest structures, period 1.6 μm EC Epiplan-APOCHROMAT 50x / 0.95, \n8 / 0, camera-adapter 0.63x\nSurface of a silicon wafer \nrecorded with a 5x EC \nEpliplan-APOCHROMAT \nobjective. The same point \nis shown in three differ-\nent contrasting techniques: \nBrightfield, darkfield\nand C-DIC. Thanks to the \ndifferent contrasting, \ndifferent details become \nvisible on the surface of the \nwafer in each case.\nBrightfield\nDarkfield\nC-DIC\nThe Contrasting Techniques –\nObserving in New Dimensions \nBrightfield and darkfield – Maximum homogeneity \nand a stray light free image background\nIn brightfield the Axio Imager Vario provides homogeneous \nillumination and exceptional contrast while, in darkfield, \nthe background is so dark that the technique has earned \na special name: ADF – Advanced Darkfield. By minimizing \ndisturbing stray light and reducing the longitudinal color \naberration of the illumination optics, this darkfield is suit-\nable for the most challenging of samples and impresses \neven when faced with the finest of structures. Switching \nbetween techniques only requires a simple turn. The mo-\ntorized stand models allow you to work particularly quickly \nand conveniently.\nC-DIC – Perfect for all structures\nCircular Differential Interference Contrast (C-DIC) is an opti-\ncal polarization procedure that, in contrast to the common \ndifferential interference contrast (DIC), works with circular, \npolarized light. The advantages of this procedure are crucial \nfor the contrasting of diverse directed object structures. \nThere is no longer the need for the preparation be turned in \nthe azimuth – with the C-DIC, a simple turn in the operating \nelement of the C-DIC slider or modulator turret is sufficient \nand all successive object information can be captured. Ad-\nditionally, it also allows for every chosen fragmentation of \nevery directed structure to be adjusted. This means that with \none DIC prism, a high contrast as well as a high resolution \ncan be achieved.\nNumerous imaging options improve the visualization of your samples. \nFor demanding tasks, Carl Zeiss’ innovative C-DIC technique makes it possible \nto achieve a clearly visible improvement in your results.\n\n\nPage 11\n11\nThe Software –\nUtilizing Modularity\nIn the fields of material research and design, requirements and areas of application are changing.\nModular and customizable, the AxioVision image analysis software, combines with Axio Imager Vario \nin order to offer you maximum flexibility and capability when analyzing your images.\nAxioVision Basic\nAxioVision offers you automated control of your ZEISS \nmicroscope, allowing you to acquire, analyze and docu-\nment features such as crystalline microstructures in your \nsamples in a single operation. Only AxioVision enables \nyou to benefit from the ZVI image format, developed by \nCarl Zeiss specifically for microscopy. The quality, content \nand meaningfulness of your valuable images are retained \nwith no loss of information and with the added benefit of \nintegrated documentation of the imaging conditions – es-\nsential for repeatability and the validation of your data. \nDepending on your requirements, the functionality of your \nselected system can be expanded to include various mod-\nules or adapted to individual applications, meaning that \nyou have an expandable solution for your microscopy ap-\nplications.\nMosaiX\nDeveloped to enable you to aquire images of large ob-\njects, MosaiX scans your samples in their entirety in just \none process. An overall image is then created from the \nindividual image tiles. This serves as an ideal overview im-\nage for navigating around the sample or as the basis for \nfurther analyses. From the MosaiX image you can perform \nmeasurements that cross image fields – the tiles present no \nrestriction – allowing you to gain valuable insights into the \ncontext and relationships of features of interest.\nMosaiX image of a \ngearwheel, 15 x 20 tiles. \nSimple, clearly presented \nuser interface for camera \ncontrol and image \nacquisition.\nDetailed view: individual \ntile of the MosaiX image.\n\n\nPage 12\nHigh-quality 1.4 megapixel\ncamera with good signal \nquality and a large dynamic \nrange\nHigh-quality 5 megapixel\ncamera with good signal \nquality\n12\nThe Cameras –\nPreserving What You See\nAxio Imager Vario provides an outstanding platform for using a wide range \nof cameras, with the AxioCam family of Carl Zeiss forming the ideal combination.\nEntry Level\nAxioCam MRc\nAxioCam MRc5\nMid-Range\nHigh-End\nThe AxioCam family – Flexibility and performance\nAs customized components in the Carl Zeiss Systems envi-\nronment, camera, microscope and software are perfectly \nmatched to form a system solution in digital imaging that \nopens up new perspectives – in the areas of performance, \nflexibility and operating comfort and for both research and \nroutine applications. Axio Imager Vario microscope platform \noffers great flexibility in camera use thanks to its standard-\nized camera ports (C Mount) in the stand and a complete \nassortment of camera adaptors. From digital compact cam-\neras (e.g., from Canon) up to professional, research-grade \ncameras of the Carl Zeiss AxioCam family, a wide variety \nof cameras are supported by the AxioVision image capture \nand analysis software. All digital cameras from Carl Zeiss \nare offered complete with a free entree-level version of \nAxioVision and guarantee optimal image quality.\n \nSome models are also available in a black and white ver-\nsion with an extended sensitivity range. The sophisticated \nintegration of Carl Zeiss cameras delivers important advan-\ntages: high speed, correct resolution, optimized live im-\nages or automatic exposure adjustment. All cameras in the \nAxioCam family are controlled via a uniform user interface \nin AxioVision. Naturally, you can also adapt the camera \noperation individually to the wide range of applications \nyou work on. \nEconomical CCD cameras \nwith 1.4 or 3.3 megapixel\nAxioCam ICc\nAxioCam HRc\n13 megapixel camera with maximum \nresolution, extremely flexible settings \nand the maximum possible signal quality\nEconomical and extremely \nflexible 5 megapixel \nCMOS camera\nAxioCam ERc 5s\n\n\nPage 13\n13\nThe Ergonomics –\nRelax While You Work\nThe Ergophototube – Relaxed work\nFor applications where great importance is attached to ergonomics, two \ndifferent Ergophototubes are available: the Ergophototube with an upright, \nunreversed image, 44 mm continuous height adjustment and 20° viewing \nangle and the Comfort-Ergophototube with an upright, unreversed image, \n50 mm continuous height adjustment and continuous horizontal extension \nof 50 mm and 15° viewing angle.\nThe docking station – Remote Microscopy\nThe freely positionable docking station operating module makes it possible \nto control the light intensity and all motorized components of the \nAxio Imager.Z2 Vario. It has a coarse and fine focus drive, a freely program-\nmable ring of buttons and a touch screen (TFT). In order to simplify complex \nsteps, all the main functions have been grouped together on the touch-screen. \nThis allows you to control all motorized components easily at the touch of \na button and to display and control the microscope status. If required, the \nintegrated light and contrast managers ensure the best possible light and \ncontrast setting. In addition to fixed presettings, it is also possible to store \ncomplex procedures as individual settings and retrieve them at any time on \na user-specific basis with just the touch of a button. Axio Imager.Z2 Vario is \ntherefore ideal fore use even in a multi-user environment.\nMARC (Manual Rotary Control) – Numerous functions all in one place\nThe control unit MARC enables you to control key microscope functions, \nwhich can all be operated intuitively and extremely conveniently using just \none hand via the coarse and fine drive knob and a ring of buttons.\nDepending on the microscope module connected, MARC can be used in \ndifferent ways: with Axio Imager.A2 Vario the unit is also used – in addition \nto focusing and the brightness control – to open and close the shutter to \nthe light intensity values of the nosepiece position and to switch between \nreflected-light and transmitted-light.\nIn the case of Axio Imager.Z2 Vario, on the other hand, MARC can be used \nas an optional control unit alongside the docking station. In this case the \nconfiguration of the buttons reflects the ring of buttons on the docking sta-\ntion. Users who prefer working with two focus drive knobs can therefore \nuse MARC and the docking station at the same time in parallel. MARC can \neither be positioned freely using the tabletop base or attached to manual \nstages close to the x-y drive. The advantage of this is that the user can focus, \ncontrol brightness and move the sample with just one hand.\nFor users who want or need to sacrifice direct viewing into the micro-\nscope, a tube module is available without an eyepiece for viewing.\nThe Comfort-Ergotube allows the user to adopt a relaxed position \neven when working with large sample stages.\nThe docking station offers the possibility of controlling the motorized \nstage via an optional coaxial drive. \nThe MARC control unit allows the key functions to be controlled \nintuitively and extremely conveniently with just one hand.\n50 mm continuous \nheight adjustment.\n50 mm continuous \nhorizontal extension.\n\n\nPage 14\n14\nAxio Imager Vario\nTechnical Data\nComponent \nOption\nAxio Imager.A2 \nVario\nAxio Imager.Z2 \nVario\nAxio Imager.Z2 \nVario without focus\nStand\nmanual\n+\n-\n-\nmotorized\n-\n+\n+\nControl box\n-\n+\n+\nO\nCoding (can be read out from PC) -\n+\n+\n+\nRemote control\nMARC\n+\nO\nO\nDocking Station with TFT\n-\nO\nO\nContrast manager\n-\n-\n+\n+\nLight manager\n-\n +*\n +**\n +**\nTube lens turret\ncoded\nO\n-\n-\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nReflector turret\n6-pos. coded\n+\n-\n-\n6-pos. motorized\n-\nO\nO\n6-pos. motorized ACR\n-\nO\nO\nNosepiece\n6-pos. coded POL Vario\nO\n-\n-\n6-pos. coded BD DIC Vario\nO\n-\n-\n6-pos. motorized POL Vario\n-\nO\nO\n6-pos. motorized BD DIC\n-\nO\nO\n7-pos. motorized BD\n-\n-\nO\nModulator turret for C-DIC/TIC\nmanual\nO\nO\nO\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nTransmitted-light illumination\nmanual\nO\nO\nO\nDouble filter wheel \n(transmitted light)\nmanual\nO\nO\nO\nmotorized\n-\n-\n-\nReflected-light illumination\nmanual\n+\n-\n-\nmotorized\n-\n+\n+\nLuminous field diaphragm \n(reflected light)\nmanual\n+\nO\nO\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nAperture diaphragm \n(reflected light)\nmanual\nO\nO\nO\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nAperture diaphragm \n(reflected light) with \naperture-diaphragm revolver\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nDouble filter wheel \n(reflected light)\nmanual\nO\nO\nO\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nFL attenuator\nmanual\nO\nO\nO\nmotorized\n-\nO\nO\nLight switching\nreflected light/transmitted light\nmanual\n O***\n+\n+\nvia Docking Station / MARC\n O***\n O***\n O***\nMixed light\nmanual\n O****\n O****\n O****\nvia Docking Station\n-\n O***\n O***\nNosepiece focus\nmotorized, \n10 nm step size resolution\n-\n+\n-\nmotorized, \n25 nm step size resolution\n+\n-\n-\nApotome\n-\nO\nO\nO\nScanning stages\nDC stepper motors\nO\nO\nO\n\n\nPage 15\n15\nMicroscope module\nAxio Imager.A2 \nVario\nAxio Imager.Z2 \nVario\nAxio Imager.Z2 \nVario without focus\nHeight of sample space\n0 -
