The factor\nfor the largest spectrum between overview and detail\nmagnification. The microscope: SteREO Discovery.V20.\nA Carl Zeiss design. And a research instrument with\nwhich the pioneer of the CMO principle (Common Main\nObjective) has once again broken new ground for the\nfuture of stereomicroscopy after the telescope principle.\nThe development of the SteREO Discovery.V20 has\nexceeded the limits of conventional modes of action.\nFounded on a new technological base and integrated\ninto the SteREO* generation series from Carl Zeiss,\nSteREO Discovery.V20 is highly impressive and boasts\na superior performance profile. For maximum precision\nand considerably more freedom in biology, medical and\nindustrial labs. The new features:\n• planapochromatic corrected microscope bodies\nwith a zoom range of 20:1\n• high end magnification of up to 345x\n(with eyepiece 10x)\n• maximum resolution of 1000LP/mm\n(with objective PlanApo S 2.3x)\n• excellent 3D-effect up to the highest\nmagnification\n• comfortable, securely reproducible operational\nand control concept with SyCoP\n• seamless integration into the modular system\nof the SteREO Discovery generation \n* SteREO – Stereomicroscopy Redefined in Ergonomics and Optics \n\n\nPage 3\n3\nteREO Discovery.V20\n\n\nPage 4\n4\nSyCoP\n1.\n2.\n3.\n3. Extraordinarily large working area:\nthe stand design with decentralized profile column S.\nThe Performance Factor:\nSuperiority Can be Documented\nAt the borders of technical possibilities details\nbecome a critical factor. Better optics is responsible\nfor a visible improvement in image information. The\neasier operation concept delivers faster results. Fac-\ntors which Carl Zeiss places the utmost importance on\nin development and consistently optimizes until the\npeak of performance is reached. The results create\nnew benchmarks. At any place where living objects\nor material samples are observed, manipulated or\ndocumented in detail, three-dimensionally and with\nhigh resolution or high contrast. \n1A in 3D: Spatial impression\nWith SteREO Discovery.V20, higher magnifications\ncan also be realized with smaller lenses thanks to\nthe large zoom range of the microscope body. The\nsmaller stereo angles associated improve the 3D\nimpression of the microscopic image. The result:\nyou remain more relaxed during observation and\nnotice even the smallest details. \nSecure the highest\nmagnifications: Stability\nHigh image resolution and end magnification place\nnew demands on the stability of the stand system of\nthis stereomicroscope. All relevant components were\ndesigned and built according to the most modern\nmethods. The stands feature a significantly higher\nrigidity and is considerably less susceptible to vibrations\nthan previous systems. The motor focusing makes fine\nfocusing in intervals of 350 nm in a range of 340 mm\nfor loads of up to 17 kg possible. \n1. With SyCoP, even the most complex stereomicroscopic operation\nprocedures can be handled comfortably. Without letting the\nsample out of your sight. With one hand, reliable and flawless.\n2. The new SteREO Discovery.V12 zoom body is parfocally adjusted.\nFor pin sharp pictures in the complete magnification range.\n\n\nPage 5\n5\nIncrease free space:\nZoom factor 20:1\nThe largest range from overview to detail –\nSteREO Discovery.V20 has brought a new zoom\nrange into the research laboratory. And what’s\nmore: even the basic configuration of this top ste-\nreomicroscope offers an end magnification of 150x.\nEquipped with the nosepiece S. cod as well as\nthe objectives PlanApo S 0.63x, PlanApo 1x and\nPlanApo S 2.3x, SteREO Discovery.V20 covers a\nmagnification range from 4.7 to 345x. That is a\nfactor of 73! With only one turn of the nosepiece. \nDecide economically:\nThe SteREO Discovery\nupgrade concept\nSteREO Discovery offers a wide spectrum of com-\npatible modules and accessory components. No\nmatter what instrument type you choose, you have\nthe freedom to upgrade your system according to\nyour needs at any time. Up to the highest-capacity\nImaging System that stereomicroscopy has to offer\ncurrently. \nSophisticated and universally compatible:\nthe wide accessory range fits for every\ninstrument type of the SteREO Discovery\ngeneration.\nIntelligent operation: SyCoP \nSyCoP stands for System Control Panel and for a\nconsiderable gain in time, overview capability and\nflexibility in the operation of increasingly complex\noperation procedures. Designed especially for the\ndemands of stereomicroscopy, the novel operation\nconcept combines joystick, keys and touch screen in\nthe handy design of a computer mouse. With SyCoP,\nalmost all important microscope functions can be\ncontrolled virtually location-independent. Fast, pre-\ncise and reproducible. Without removing your eye\nfrom the eyepiece ocular. Your attention stays on\nthe object. In addition, SyCoP provides current data\nabout the total magnification, object field, resolution\nand depth of focus of your microscope setting.\nSyCoP is an option for the future. New functions\nand further accessories are integrated through the\nopen CAN-Bus concept. \n\n\nPage 6\n6\nSteREO Discovery.\nThe Technology Factor:\nExceeding the Limits\nAt the limits:\nThe conventional technology\nThe centerpiece of a CMO stereomicroscope is the\npancrat (microscope or zoom body). During zoom-\ning, lenses are moved and must be brought into a\ncertain position in relation to other securely in-\nstalled lenses with extraordinary precision. Until\nnow a mechanical curve – a simple metal piece\nmilled with great care – determined largely parts the\nexactness of the traverse path of these lenses and\nthereby the overall microscope quality. The precision\nrequired for new stereomicroscope generations can\nno longer be fulfilled in this way. \nThe solution:\nThe new active principle\nOn the SteREO Discovery.V20, this mechanical curve\nhas been replaced by a virtual one. The movable\nlenses are moved with a stepping motor and posi-\ntioned exactly with a processor. The microscopic\nimages then stay considerably sharper. That has some\ndefinite advantages for your research applications: \n• 3D images can be viewed in the stereomi-\ncroscope in a noticeably more relaxed way\nThe partial images which are produced for our\neyes are much sharper and better coordinated.\nThe effort of the brain to create a 3D image\nis less.\n• Sharper images produce\ncontrast improvements\nParticularly decisive when the stereomicroscope\nis used in high and the highest magnifications.\nMicroscopy pushed to the limits of useful\nmagnification. \n• Higher magnifications with a\nlarger zoom range\nUntil recently a zoom with a factor of 16 but\nnot higher was considered technically possible\nbut this limit can now be exceeded considerably\nwith this new technology. And it’s affordable. \nCarl Zeiss has created a new milestone in stereomi-\ncroscopy with the SteREO Discovery.V20. Over 30\ninvention disclosures and patent applications are pro-\nviding that this technological advantage is preserved. \nBetter 3D images, higher resolution, larger zoom\nranges – technologically, the conventional stereo-\nmicroscope has reached its limits. Each lens, each\nmechanical detail exhibits tolerances – regardless of\nthe precision of the production. The higher the\ndemands on resolution and magnification become,\nthe less acceptable are these tolerances. \nFast, flexible and effective: the final assembly of the stereomicroscope\nSteREO Discovery in the clean rooms of Carl Zeiss MicroImaging GmbH\nin Jena. It is customized as “individual item chain production according to\nthe Wertstrom design criteria”.\n\n\nPage 7\n7\n1.\n2.\n3.\n4.\n5.\n6.\nV20\nZoom position of \npancrat\nDefocus position in μm \nDepth of field curve, with in these parameters the picture is\nin focus \nTypical defocus curve of one channel with classical adjustment\n(pancrat with mechanical zoom curve)\nTypical defocus curve of one channel of the SteREO Discovery.V20\n(pancrat with virtual electronically derived curve)\n1. Before the assembly begins each lens is exactly calibrated\nagainst a “0-lens type”. This lens value is digitally saved in\na data pool – the basis on which computer-calculated\ncombinations are established. By doing this, an optimally\ncoordinated lens family is developed for every individual\nmicroscope\n2. Rotating reflexes of a lens. As soon as it is in the circle…\n3. ... a moveable micro clapper of the computer-controlled\nglue leveling machine autonomously undertakes the fine\nalignment.\n4. After being moved into place, the lenses are immediately\nfixed. Precision tools automatically lay high-precision,\nuninterrupted glue beads through a strong cannula\n0.5 mm wide.\n5. Hardening of the glue beads under UV-radiation.\n6. In the pancrat adjusting device, the precise procedures of all\nmoveable optical elements are programmed. To do this,\naround 7000 supporting points are analyzed via computer.\nIn doing so, each stereomicroscope obtains its own correc-\ntion – its own individual zoom control curve.\nIllustration of the defocus curve of a classical mechanical pancrat in comparison\nto a motorized one (SteREO Discovery.V20). It is clear that the motorized pan-\ncrat differs from the 0 line about half less than the mechanical one. That means:\nSteREO Discovery.V20 with motorized pancrat delivers twice as sharp images.\n\n\nPage 8\n8\nS\n1.\n2.\n4.\n3.\n1. Tubes\nToday ergonomics is a basic demand on microscopy.\nThe user’s posture should remain relaxed even over\nlong periods of work. An important factor for this\nare the observation tubes. The eyepiece sockets are\nswingable and adjustable in two levels. With the\nergotube the angle of vision can be individually\nadjusted between 5 and 45 degrees.\n2. Objectives\nObjectives largely determine the image quality –\nand they are a relevant economic factor. The selec-\ntion of objectives for the SteREO Discovery.V20\nreceives special attention for a reason. The spectrum\nranges from the cost-effective objectives of the\nAchromat series to the high-capacity Plan-Achromat\nobjectives to the Plan-Apochromat series, which\nmeets the highest requirements. \n3. Stages\nDesigned to move your objects gently and jolt-free\nduring observation – a wide spectrum of different\nstages is available for the SteREO Discovery.V20.\nAccording to your needs, choose from sliding,\nrotating, mechanical or ball-and-socket stages.\nThe motorized mechanical stage offers an addi-\ntional advantage in precision when adjusting and\ncontrolling objects: precisely accurate, fast and\nreproducible. \n4. Fluorescence\nPentaFluar S is the retrofittable intermediate tube\nwith a coaxial fluorescence mechanism which con-\nverts your SteREO Discovery.V20 into a high-\ncapacity fluorescence system. The filter turret\nholds up to five filter modules and there are also\nmany possibilities regarding illumination. Besides\nthe well-established HBO lamps, X-Cite 120 with\na liquid lightguide is recommended. \nThe Flexibility Factor:\nthe Upgrade Possiblities are Endless\nThe modular construction of the SteREO Discovery.V20\nis typical for main lens stereomicroscopes. The multi-\ntude of accessory components which you can have\ninstalled on the high-capacity stereomicroscope in\norder to create an effective observation and docu-\nmentation system is correspondingly wide . The flexi-\nbility is unusual: completely integrated into the\nCarl Zeiss system world and equipped with intelligent\ninterfaces, each component can be installed for every\ninstrument type in the SteREO Discovery range. \n\n\nPage 9\n9\nteREO Discovery.V20\n5.\n6.\n8.\n5. Cameras\nThe demands on the documentation of microscopic\nimages in research are as different as the projects\nthemselves. The spectrum of digital microscope\ncameras for the innovative high-performance\nsystem SteREO Discovery.V20 is correspondingly\ndiverse. Starting with digital consumer cameras\nthrough to professional cameras of the microscope\ncamera family AxioCam, Carl Zeiss offers you a suit-\nable price and performance class for every demand. \n6. Illumination\nThe quality of illumination essentially determines\nthe quality of the results – in particular with stereo-\nmicroscopic contrasts. With an elaborate system of\ninterfaces and adapters, SteREO Discovery.V20 can\nbe equipped with modern fiber optic LED-compo-\nnents. Optimal for the illumination and contrasting\nof various objects. \n7. Operation\nCompletely motorized, SteREO Discovery.V20 offers\nreproducibility and considerable simplifications for\nyour experiment procedures. In particular for con-\ntrolling object details as well as for setting illumina-\ntion and contrasts. In addition, the innovative control\nsystem is now available. Designed to be user-friendly\nand securely operable. This is the foundation of the\nfact that the control of the current highest-capacity\nstereomicroscopy research device practically runs\nitself. \n8. Microscope Software\nAxioVision is the superior software for microscope\ncontrol, image acquisition, image processing,\nimage administration and archiving. With a univer-\nsal modular design and upgradeable according to\nyour needs from the basic version to the most\ndemanding special configuration. The microscope\nsoftware from Carl Zeiss is completely integrated to\nthe current highest-capacity analysis platform and\nholds a top position worldwide on account of its\nsimple operation principle and its high productivity.\n\n\nPage 10\n10\n1.\n2.\n3.\nS\nTrue to reality, completely shift-free 3D imaging of\nthe researched specimen are the demands of\ncontemporary stereomicroscopy. From a complete\noverview down to the smallest detail like organs,\ntissues and neurons. Now, Carl Zeiss raises the bar\neven higher.\nSteREO Discovery.V20 with its zoom of 20x doesn’t\njust deliver a large magnification range, it also shines\nwith a brilliant image quality in the research of living\nspecimen and other objects of Life Science. The con-\nsequent minimization of stray light of all tubes, the\nzoom body and the objectives as well as the indi-\nvidually tailored zoom curve, allow for a rich contrast\nin the images over the entire zoom range – from the\noverview up to the highest magnification. The large\nbase and the grand front lens add to the unique\n3D effect. \nTherefore the SteREO Discovery.V20 ensures an\nimage quality that you can count on in research\nfacilities and laboratories of biology and medicine. It\nis also ideal to observe and research model organ-\nisms of developmental biology.\nPractical Life Sciences:\nHigh Magnifications,\nExcellent Depth Perception\n1. Mouse embryo, stained, transmitted-light brightfield,\nobjective PlanApo S 0.63x, magnification 4.7x* \n2. Mouse embryo, stained, transmitted-light brightfield,\nobjective PlanApo S 0.63x, magnification 94x*\n3. Diatome, transmitted-light darkfield,\nobjective PlanApo S 2.3x, magnification 345x*\n\n\nPage 11\n11\n1.\n2.\n3.\nteREO Discovery.V20\nThe demands for high-end stereomicroscopes rise\nwith the perception of smaller details. On one hand\nthere is the need for fast orientation of where you\nare in the specimen and that requires a large\noverview. On the other hand there is the need for\nobserving and documenting the smallest detail in\na rapid switch from the overview image – ideally\nwithout re-focussing. \nThe SteREO Discovery.V20 with a zoom of 20x gives\nyou a vast advantage in your lab. It is the only\nstereomicroscope that allows a fast switch from\noverview to detail image. Here the motorised zoom\ndelivers a precise and free to choose zoom position.\nAnd it only differs less than 1%. That means a\nreproducibility of more than 99%! This is the pre-\ncision of an ideal research instrument with its\nalways correctly scaled images to measure and\ndocument tasks in micromechanics and quality\ncontrol. And it is a safe investment into a new\ndimension of achievement. \nPractical Materials:\n99% Reproducibility,\n100% Investment Security\n1.
