Reading abrasive specifications

A practical checklist for comparing catalogue entries without losing their original specification.

01 / Keep the designation intact

Store the manufacturer’s original grit or particle-size designation, including its standard prefix. Similar-looking numbers from different grading systems should not be treated as identical.

02 / Separate size from finish

An abrasive size describes the abrasive specification. It is not a guaranteed surface roughness. The process, workpiece and measurement method also affect the result.

03 / Record dimensions and interfaces

For discs, belts, wheels and pads, record all specified dimensions and the attachment or mounting interface. Keep metric and imperial values labelled.

04 / Link the current documentation

Retain the source page and relevant technical or safety documentation. Check the manufacturer’s stated machine compatibility and operating limits before selection.

This is an editorial selection checklist. Manufacturer instructions and the applicable specification govern an individual product or process.
