Controlled peening variables
Media velocity, exposure time and impact angle are adjustable around the required intensity range. The equipment concept is selected according to workpiece geometry, material and the specified peening intensity.
Almen intensity provides a controlled process reference, but coverage and component-specific acceptance criteria must also be defined.
Applications
Documented applications include turbine blades and discs, landing gear and aerospace structures, weld seams, powertrain components and transmission parts.
The process can counter tensile stresses introduced by machining, grinding or heat treatment and can condition a surface for improved operating performance.
Handling configurations
Rotary tables, satellite spindles, robotic grippers and monorail systems are available to position components and expose the required surfaces.
Handling choice depends on geometry, masking, shadow risk, part mass and whether the cycle is stand-alone or integrated into a line.
Quality assurance
PLC/HMI or SCADA-based monitoring can record process data for quality traceability. Real-time media separation and sizing help keep shot quality consistent.
Production approval should establish media condition limits, Almen verification frequency, coverage inspection and alarm handling for the selected industry specification.
